Where does the Tymon name Originate?
The exact origin of the name Tymon , or Tigh Mothain - the official Irish name given by the placenames commission to the area of Dublin to which the name relates is unknown. Variants of the name include Timon, Tymothan, Teach-Munna and Stamuthan. Click on the link on the right for more details of variants. The name Taghmon, a modern version of Teach-Munna is a placename in County Wexford and County Westmeath. Both these locations have associations with St. Fintan or Munna and thus one possible explanation for the Tymon name is that it may have connections with this saint.
Another possible explanation is that the lands at Tymon (in Dublin) may have been in the ownership of an Irish Clan by the name of O'Mothain (In Irish O' refers to grandson of). There have been several discoveries of archeological remains in the Tymon area. In the 1880s a burial urn, together with fragments of a smaller vessel, two flint scrapers and some human remains were discovered in a rough cist of large stones near Green hills. This find was dated to the Middle Bronze Age around 1500 BC.
According to the South Mayo Family Research Centre, the Tymon name, whilst being uncommon in the County, occurs from the early 19th Century, most commonly in the parishes of Knock, Aghamore, Bekan and Kilcolman. There are also known occurrences of the surname in Sligo and Roscommon.urrences of the surname in Sligo and the town of Boyle.
